Costs & Timelines
How much does it cost to convert a van?
The cost of van conversions varies based on your specific mission profile and component choices. For clients providing their own chassis, our recommended 4-season high-performance builds typically start at $55,000. This investment covers our signature 80/20 aluminum structural framing, advanced thermal insulation, and integrated off-grid power systems. You can explore our currently available pre-built conversion vans [here].
How long does a full van conversion usually take?
Typically, a bespoke Bitterroot conversion takes between 7 and 8 weeks to complete once the vehicle is in our shop. We prioritize precision over speed to ensure every system is triple-tested. Please keep in mind that global supply chains for specific high-end components (like specialized lithium batteries or custom windows) can occasionally impact the overall duration of your build.such as specialized lithium batteries or custom windows) can occasionally affect
Platform & Project Scope
Do you work on Dodge ProMaster or Ford Transit vans?
es. While we are recognized specialists in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit AWD platforms, our engineering process is adaptable to any major van chassis, including the Dodge ProMaster. Our goal is to maximize the unique geometry of your specific vehicle.
Do you take on small jobs or component installs?
While we prioritize full custom conversions, we are happy to assist with select technical projects—such as heater installations, electrical overhauls, or solar upgrades—as our shop schedule allows. We believe every upgrade should move your rig closer to the "Bitterroot Standard" of reliability.
Do you work on other van builder conversions?
We do. We frequently work on all types of van conversions and are often brought in to "finish" or optimize a dream build. We can also repair, troubleshoot, or professionally "fix" systems in existing conversions to ensure they are safe and trail-ready.
Technical Specifications
Is it worth the extra cost to go for 80/20 extruded aluminum?
Definitely. We believe 80/20 T-slot aluminum is the only choice for a high-performance build. It is incredibly lightweight but provides massive structural rigidity. By using aluminum instead of a traditional wood frame, we can achieve up to 1,000 lbs of weight savings, which directly improves your fuel economy, braking distance, and overall vehicle longevity. Plus, it eliminates the "squeak and rattle" common in wood-on-wood builds.
Should I go for a propane or induction stove in my van build?
Both have distinct advantages depending on your travel style. Induction stoves are safe and boil water incredibly fast, but they require a robust lithium battery bank and a high-output inverter. Propane stoves offer precise temperature control for gourmet cooking and don't drain your electrical system, though they require venting and fuel storage. We help you choose based on your specific "Energy Profile" during the design phase.
What does it cost to install a heater in my van?
A professional heater installation typically costs between $650 and $1,200 plus the cost of the unit itself. The price varies based on the complexity of the fuel line integration and the mounting location (common spots include under the passenger seat or inside a custom cabinet). We exclusively use and recommend high-altitude-ready heaters from Webasto and Espar.
Can you handle the complex conversion of van electrical power systems?
Yes. We have extensive experience engineering and installing off-grid 12V, 24V, and 48V electrical systems. We specialize in high-capacity lithium integration and "Agnostic Power" setups using
How much does it cost to put an awning on my van?
Professional awning installation starts at $600.00 plus the cost of the hardware. If your specific roof rack or high-roof configuration requires custom-fabricated mounting brackets, the price may adjust accordingly to ensure a wind-resistant, secure fit.
