THE BITTERROOT STORY

About Bitterroot builds

Before we were builders, we were explorers. Our team spent years skiing the Wasatch, climbing in the San Juans, and riding motorcycles across the high desert of the American West. We’ve slept in everything: tents, truck beds, pop-ups, and bivy sacks. We’ve stayed in the remote hotels and the canvas wall tents.

Through over a decade of trial and error, we kept returning to the same question: What is the perfect basecamp?

The answer didn't exist in the domestic market at the time. We needed a vehicle that could handle 4x4 terrain without the burden of a trailer, while providing the climate-controlled comfort required for 4-season mountain living. It wasn't until we explored the European camper van market that the vision for Bitterroot Builds truly took shape.

Who We Are

Built by People Who Actually Use the Vans

We don't build based on trends; we build based on the landscapes that define the West—from the North Cascades to the Sierra Nevadas.

Since 2017, we have designed, engineered, and upgraded rigs for:

  • Full-time Van Living: Systems that don't just work for a weekend, but for a lifetime on the road.
  • Remote Work & Mobile Offices: High-output power for the digital nomad.
  • Extreme Seasonal Adventures: Insulated for sub-zero trailheads and 100°F desert floors.

We understand what works, what exactly fails, and why, when a vehicle is pushed into demanding terrain. That real-world experience is built into every 80/20 aluminum joint and electrical circuit we produce.

Behind the Name

Inspired by the Bitterroots

The name Bitterroot Builds isn’t just an alliteration; it’s a tribute to the landscape that defined our standards. Stretching along the border of Idaho and Montana, the Bitterroot Mountain Range is a place of uncompromising beauty and unforgiving terrain.

It is a wilderness that demands respect and rewards those who are prepared. We chose this name because it represents the "North Star" for every van that leaves our shop:

  • Rugged Resilience: Built to handle the washboard roads and steep grades of the high country.
  • Functional Simplicity: Design that works when you are miles from the nearest paved road.
  • Quiet Strength: Like the granite peaks of the range, our 80/20 aluminum frames are built to be silent, steady, and permanent.

When we build a van, we aren't just building for a paved campsite. We are building for the Bitterroots, and everywhere else the trail might lead.

Engineering Without Compromise

Trust is built on a foundation of precision, and at Bitterroot Builds, our authority is rooted in over a decade of combined expertise in aerospace-grade engineering and high-altitude exploration. We don’t just build vans; we engineer mobile sanctuaries designed to thrive where others fail. Our team is comprised of specialized craftsmen who pioneered the use of 80/20 extruded aluminum architecture in the Salt Lake City region—a methodology that ensures your build remains silent and structurally sound across thousands of miles of washboard roads.

Our expertise spans the most complex systems in the industry, from high-voltage 48V EcoFlow power grids to 4-season thermal management systems tested in the harshest Intermountain West winters. We are more than builders; we are backcountry users who have spent thousands of nights off-grid, allowing us to anticipate the technical needs of our clients before the first bolt is ever turned. When you choose Bitterroot, you aren't just getting a van; you are gaining a partner committed to transparency, technical redundancy, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing your home was built by the most experienced hands in the industry.
